chef's special: MarySavel

so i randomly stumbled upon MarySavel‘s clothes on etsy the other day and loved the feminine and vintage look of the dresses and shirts in the shop.  and after asking the designer a few questions about her clothes, she seems like a pretty cool person too!  please check out her shop and read her q&a – thanks!

How did you get started creating clothes?

I got laid off from my job in December and I immediately took advantage of having hours and hours to sit at my sewing machine or computer dreaming up designs and things that I wanted to create for myself and other people.  I made a few dresses and got some really great feedback from friends and family.  I started posting on etsy and voila!

What three words would you use to describe your current collection?

Can I pick 6?  3 is not cutting it…evolving, feminine, sexy, simple, pretty, fluid.

What do you think makes your designs different?

My designs reflect me and my own personal style.  I design with myself in mind first, and translate that into pieces that every woman can feel feminine and comfortable wearing.  I don’t like a lot of frills or anything that looks like you’re trying too hard.  Clothes should be easier than that.  They should be an accompaniment not a distraction.

What do you see in the future for your collection?

I see a continuation of an evolving array of fun, simple and classic designs.  Also, look out for pants, leather and maybe menswear.

Why should people buy clothes from an independent designer instead of a mass-market store?

Because indpendent designers are AWESOME.  No, for real, buy from independent designers like me so I don’t have to get a job.
