books i’ve read recently

i used to hate reading, especially when i was in school and was forced to read books not on my time and not of which i chose.  it wasn’t until the end of college and after i graduated when i had time to read on my own that i started to really like it.  now i’m always reading a book.  here are some i have read lately:

Power of One by Bryce Courtenay – it’s set in South Africa during apartheid, a coming of age book about a white, English boy raising himself, facing adversity.  i watched the movie a couple times in school when i was younger, but finally picked up the book.  there are parts of the book that will make you cringe, sad, and happy.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson – this book is the first in a popular 3-part series.  it’s mostly mystery/suspense with some love story, set in Sweden about a large family with a hidden past.  it took about 70 pages for me to get into this, but once the story picked up i couldn’t put the book down.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett – this follows the different perspectives of 4 women during the civil rights movement in Mississippi, including the maids and the women they work for.  i just finished this over the weekend and highly recommend it!
