Like the dress you see in the latest issue of Vogue? What do you do if you want to buy it? You have to look at where it’s from if it happens to be listed and then search online or go to a store to see if it’s available to purchase. Well, that may be a thing of the past. According to an article in Bloomberg.com, fashion magazines like Vogue and Elle may soon incorporate e-commerce into their editorial allowing readers to click-to-buy items through the online versions of their magazines. With magazines losing advertising revenue in print and the success of online-only retailers, media companies are looking for creative ways to expand, increase revenue and engage with readers.
When I was younger, my sister and I would watch TV and say “wouldn’t it be cool if we could touch the TV screen and buy what we see?” Like magazines, TV networks are also looking for other ways to increase their bottom line, so I can definitely see something like this happening soon, especially with people being able to stream TV onto their computers and iPads.
What do you think of the convergence of media and shopping? Would you click-to-buy something you read in an online magazine or see on TV?
