I burned a hole in a brand new ASOS shirt

I hate ironing.  I’d rather just not wear the shirt at all or wear it wrinkled than deal with ironing.  But last night I thought I’d stop being lazy and iron a shirt for work.  It was borderline wrinkled, but there was another shirt that needed some ironing too so I decided to just iron them both.

I turned on the iron, touched it to my shirt..and it happened.  I had a hole in the shirt and part of the shirt burned onto the iron.  Apparently the shirt is polyester and I had the iron set on the highest setting :(  What makes it worse is that it’s a brand new shirt from ASOS that I have never worn before.  I went back and forth on even buying it because of the color and style, but decided to go for it.  Now it’s ruined.  Has anyone else done this before?  It’s a first for me.  Since the hole is at the bottom, I may try out tucking it in to the highest waist jeans I have to hopefully hide it.  And luckily I have an extra iron to replace the ruined one..unless anyone knows a secret for getting burned material off the iron?

Ack! And that is such a cute shirt. I heard oven cleaner works, but I have never tried it. Best of luck!

Hm – interesting – thanks Anne! I think I’m going to try the tuck-in thing so I can at least get 1 outfit out of it.

Arghhhh! I hate that! I literally cried when I burned a whole into a silk BCBG blouse. Yes, you can tuck in the blouse or take it to a tailor to refashion!
Get your iron cleaned by using a Brillo pad or running the hot iron over some salt. I pour the salt on a newspaper.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has done this and thank you for the advice Chandra – I will try that!

Aaaw, I’m sorry to hear about that.
I’ve just spent the whole day tailoring a ridiculously long vintage top that I bought from Topshop last week (the design was just too cute – I had to have it). I decided to iron over the hem to clean things up. I started off by being cautious by placing an old top over it but then I made the stupid mistake of ironing directly on to the top when I got impatient and BAM! A MASSIVE hole. I don’t know what to do with it now :(

Aw – Louisa, totally understand! That stinks. Where is the hole? Can you patch it up somehow or is it at the bottom so you can tuck it in?

Nooooo, I hate when that happens!
