What I bought from the Jason Wu for Target collection

On Sunday, I wrote about my thoughts on Target’s designer collections.  Unlike many people, I was lucky enough to be able to score some pieces from Jason Wu for Target that I’m happy with.

I didn’t try them out at the store because I would rather try clothes on at home and return them if they don’t fit right.  When I did finally try them on though, I was very happy with the way they fit!  I was most unsure of the shirt on the left, particulary the boxy shape.  I thought the shape would be unflattering, but it turns out it looks good and I am in love with the color.  Now I just need spring to come so I can wear these!

What’d you get from this collection?

Was Jason Wu for Target a success?

Today was the official launch of the Jason Wu for Target exclusive collection.  You probably saw press and advertising about this collection over the past few months.  There was a TV ad, full page spreads in national magazines, and posts in many popular blogs featuring the LookBook.  Even today on Twitter, Target is actively promoting the collection with a promoted tweet.

Target has been doing designer collaborations for years now and I’m a big fan.  I have pieces from Target collections with Rodarte, Jovovich-Hawk, and Libertine.  It wasn’t until Target’s last collection with Missoni that I noticed all of the press and advertising leading up to the launch of the collection.  But was getting fashionable fans all over the country excited about the Jason Wu for Target launch on February 5th worth it?

This morning I was at my local Target at 8:45, 45 minutes after the store opened.  I almost walked by the Jason Wu for Target display since it was only 2 racks.  I was very familiar with the LookBook, having viewed it at least 4 times in the past few days so I can strategize about what I wanted to purchase in case there was a mad rush at the store.  I was very disappointed to find that the store only had about 13 of the 37 clothing items from the LookBook and nothing near my size for the one item I wanted from the LookBook that was actually in the store (the black pleated skirt).  My friend, Kim, and I had also planned ahead knowing that we were both going to different stores in MA around the same time so we could buy items for each other if our stores were sold out.  The first Target she went to only had XL sizes left and the second store she went to wasn’t even carrying Jason Wu for Target!  Kim even coordinated with her sister on the west coast who was in line with 4 other people for the store opening and was similarly disappointed by the selection.

Looking through Twitter just now, there are people who are happy with their purchases, but there seems to be an overwhelming amount of disappointed tweets about products being sold out online, a limited amount of sizes available in stores, and some stores not even participating.

If you try purchasing online right now, Target for the most part directs you back to stores to find items that are sold out online.  When you search to find what store has those items, most times they are out of stock there too!

Yet, when you search on eBay, 5,752 items from the Jason Wu for Target collection are for sale, including this dress (up to $137.50 at 2PM EST on 2/5), which is out of stock online and never even made it to the Target stores near me.

So, was the Jason Wu for Target collection a success?  On the positive side for Target, I did end up spending $138 when I was there this morning on 2 shirts and 1 dress from the Jason Wu collection, plus 2 other items.  It does help bring Target’s image to the forefront as a more modern brand in relation to Walmart and its other competitors.  And, the website didn’t go down, so that’s an improvement from the Missoni collection.  However, expectations were not clearly set for customers and we are not happy.  The TV commercial never references that only select stores are participating in this collection and the “select stores” on the print ad was strategically designed as the least prominent part of the whole ad.  It’s known that these collections have limited quantities, but not known that individual stores only carry a very small subset of the entire collection and that even online inventory was extremely low.

Did you try buying Jason Wu for Target?  How was your experience?

Look what I bought!

I’ve been looking for a pair of everyday winter boots.  I had a gray pair last year that I got at DSW that worked for the season, but didn’t make it through the winter.  I ended wearing them so much they got a whole in the heel, which wasn’t helpful when walking through snow.  So I got a Toms catalog in the mail the other day and saw some cute fleece/faux fur lined boots that they said are warm, so I thought I’d give them a try!

I’ve worn these once so far and they are warm.  I’m a little hesitant to believe they’ll last through walks in the snow and sand through the winter.. so we’ll see!
