Dressing Punk When You’re an Adult

Published On May 8, 2017 | By Ella Looper | Fashion

The whole punk rock look is very much for teenagers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a great punk style as an adult too. Maybe during your teenage years you dressed in a punk fashion, or perhaps now you’re an adult you want to experiment with your style a little and discover what really works for you. Dressing punk as an adult isn’t difficult, and here are some tips to help you along.

  1. Show off your tattoos

Dressing punk is all about showing off your rebellious side, and what better way to do this than with your tattoos. Don’t worry if you don’t have any tattoos – it’s not necessary to complete the punk style, but if you’ve been hiding them until now, it’s time to show them off to the world! It’s illegal for children and teens to get tattoos anyway, so rocking a punk style as an adult is much more fun. If you’re planning on getting tattoos, be careful whereabouts on your body you get them, since many employers look down on tattoos and won’t hire a good candidate simply because they’re inked.

  1. Choose your jewellery

Chokers, chains and black jewellery will do wonders for your punk outfits. You can find punk clothing online on websites which often have plenty of jewellery for sale too. However, if you’re going to work, avoid anything which is too bold or ‘out there’. A small pair of punk earrings or a necklace with a cute pendant will be subtle while adding that extra touch to your style. Thick chokers, on the other hand, are better off saved for the weekend or evening drinks after work.

  1. Restyle your hair

Again, you’ll have to take your job into consideration. If you’re expected to look pristine and professional, you might want to avoid a full-on punk rock haircut. You can still experiment with different colours – maybe you’ve always wanted to dye your hair black. Deep reds and purples can be great colours too, so go to your salon and ask them to help you choose a colour and style which will suit you.

  1. Embrace the colour black

Too much colour in your outfits will take away from the punk look that you’re trying to achieve, so opt for black items if you want to truly pull this style off. Sure, you can add some other colours, but for a quick way to dress punk in minutes, dig out your favourite black numbers. Black boots, dresses, skirts, shirts and jeans are all classic items that are flattering too – what’s not to love?

  1. Browse the internet for ideas

If you’re running low on ideas for dressing punk as an adult, Pinterest and Instagram are full of amazing ideas that you might want to try. You can also look at punk clothing shops online and get some ideas for different outfits, even if you don’t want to buy anything at the moment.
