what to wear apple picking

not sure what to wear apple picking?  never been apple picking?  don’t worry, i am from new england and have only gone a couple times!  i went a couple years ago and even though the apples late in the season when we went were picked over, it was still fun to walk around in the orchard enjoying the sun and crisp fall air.

as you would imagine, the keys to dressing for apple picking are to dress comfortably and in layers. you’ll be walking around in the grass, so wear flat shoes. and it may be cold when you first get there, but after you start searching around and walking from tree to tree or drink some hot apple cider, you will warm up.  here are some sweaters and scarves that are perfect for apple picking:

wrap sweater by ninu

cardigan by Branch Handmade

ikat scarf by futurecraft

fringe scarf by seed knits

don’t have apple trees where you are?  what outdoor fall activity do you enjoy?

independent designers in sunny florida!

i’m on vacation later this week, going to florida with my boyfriend and our friends.  i can’t wait for sun, the beach, drinks, relaxation, friends, food. (sorry if i’m making you jealous!)  i have only been on one other vacation this year to the cape and we got a tropical storm the whole time, so it was very unsatisfying.  anyway, in honor of the sunshine state, here are some florida based independent designers:

The Karma Tree (jewelry) – tons of handmade jewelry, including everything from nature-inspired feather and turtle charms to pretty stones like sapphire and amethyst.

Ice it by Bebe Z (tees) – designed and manufactured in the US.  their designs have even been licensed out to one of my guilty pleasures, LA Ink!

Maddie Kay (handbags) – these cute bags are handmade by a mom of twins.

how to wear animal print

animal print is one thing that will never get out of style and is a great way to add some pop to your outfit.  and no need to get intimidated by it – there are many ways of incorporating it into your outfit.  whether you want to test it out and be subtle or take it all on and go bold. get inspired by these animal print wearing celebs!

barely there: nicole richie wears a brown shirt with black animal print on it. it adds a nice, subtle texture to her layered look.

subtle: add some glam to an all-black outfit with leapord print accessories, like these shoes on kim kardashian, or try a leopard handbag or belt.

noticeable: this particular outfit is for summer, but can still be applied to fall/winter.  follow sarah jessica parker’s lead and wear an animal print dress with a plain colored blazer or sweater over it.

bold: how daring are you?  vanessa hudgens goes all out in leopard print pants.

where i shop: vintage in Boston

last weekend i visited Cafe Society, a quaint vintage shop in Brookline Hills, just outside of Boston.  Café Society carries vintage clothes, purses, shoes, and jewelry primarily for women, but they also carry men’s and children’s vintage clothes.  while i was there, i bought a green/gray tweed blazer with brown buttons for only $25! it’s very menswear, and will look great with skinny jeans and heels.  i also had my eyes on a blue floral dress with a bow collar and a yellow and gray dress – both very Mad Men.

what i like best about Cafe Society is the woman who works there (i’m assuming the owner).  you know how it sometimes gets awkward when you walk into a store that’s not very busy and you feel like the person working there is watching your every move?  well this store is the opposite.  i searched around the whole store and tried things on with no pressure at all.  i was asked if i needed any help and when i responded that i was all set, i was happily on my own searching through the racks.

for a low-key vintage shopping excursion, drive out to Cafe Society in Brookline Village and let me know what you find!

what i read: La vie..J’aime blog

i first found La vie..J’aime through some other Boston fashion blogs that i read.  what i like about it is that Jaime writes fun fashion-based posts like “what i wear wednesdays” and posts about celebrity fashion, outfit recommendations etc. but she also adds posts and pictures about Boston events and New England vacations.  i asked Jaime recently what fall fashion trends she is looking forward to and here is her stylish response:

I love living in New England because here you can truly experience all four seasons. Fall is my favorite time of year, not only for apple picking and crisp, sunny days, but for fall fashion!  This year, I am looking forward to these trends…

Something velvet: The lush, rich quality of this fabric is perfect in a dress or blazer.

Boyfriend cardigan: I adore this look, esp when I accessorize with feminine touches. I just purchased this cardy from Nordstrom that I cannot wait to wear this fall…

OTK boots: OTK (over-the-knee) boots are on my list this year.  I have a black, leather pair of knee high boots from Italy that I love, so I am in the market for brown.  These catch my eye.

Leather jacket: This Kenneth Cole one is right up my alley. I love the modern silhouette and two-tone quality.

Gray nails: I really like Chinchilly from Essie’s fall/winter collection last year.

diy: how to glam up a basic top with shoulder detail

this is such a fun project to transform your basic tees into trendy tops with shoulder detail.  this video shows you a few different shoulder detail options, but i’m sure you can come up with other great ways to add your own detail. let me know if you try this!

thank you reiter8 for the recycled sail bag!

about a month ago, i contacted katherine at reiter8 about purchasing a custom recycled sail bag. she was very responsive and accommodating – getting back to my questions quickly and giving me choices on color and layout. reiter8 takes sails that are no longer being used and recycles them into unique bags, pillows, wallets, luggage tags and more.

the bag she created for me had a blue number 30 on it with green organic cotton lining. this week is my parent’s 30th wedding anniversary. when they first met, they went sailing a lot and they recently started picking it up again. so my sister and i gave the custom sail bag to them this weekend for their anniversary and they loved it! i was thinking they can use it as a beach bag or for when they go sailing, but my mom loved it so much that she brought it out to dinner that night.

so thank you very much katherine! if you are looking for a unique gift, i recommend you check out reiter8!

my favorite indie finds from N.E.E.T magazine

the september issue of indie magazine, N.E.E.T., just came out!  here are my favorite finds from the issue:

- an article about Fischer Clothing.  i am really excited about their fall collection..and hint, hint..you will be seeing a lot more of Fischer at the clothing menu next month!

- a section featuring some really fun illustrations based off the missed connections from craiglist.  have you ever read through those?  i wonder if any have worked!  the illustrator, Sophie Blackall, sells the illustrations as prints from her shop.
