Colorful spring outfit inspired by Amanda Seyfried

I realize there’s a few more weeks until it’s officially spring, but I’m over talking about winter! I do like the layering and boots worn in the winter, but the colors and dresses of the spring are more fun.

This outfit on Amanda Seyfried was actually taken in December, which is a nice way of wearing color in the winter. For spring, I found an even brighter yellow Splendid high-low dress and bright blue LOFT blazer that could be a cute look for work. I thought it was interesting that she (well, her stylist) chose nude heels to go with her outfit. It’s a smart way to keep the focus on the already bright colors on top. What do you think of these colors together?

My work outfits are back!

My work outfits are back because I was finally back in the office yesterday after being out 7 weeks! In January, on a rainy evening after working late, I slipped and fell outside and broke my arm!  It’s been a very tough past couple months. I’m someone who avoids risky situations for fear that I’ll get hurt, so I’m still in shock that I got hurt so randomly.  The good news is I didn’t need surgery or anything like that..I just needed time and rest and now my bone is healed and I’m onto physical therapy. All of my friends, co-workers, family and especially my boyfriend have been amazingly supportive, so I’m very lucky for that.

It was actually very nice to be dressed up again yesterday in this comfortable Max Studio dress.  I will be honest..I didn’t wear the heels pictured here in the office.  I’m going to be wearing flats for awhile until my paranoia over falling again goes away.

My yearly clothing budget

Most of my money has gone to clothes ever since I started making my own money babysitting. The hardest time was my first year living in NYC, the year after I graduated college. I was working entry-level at a small advertising agency (barely made any money) and living in the financial district in Manhattan (all of my monthly paychecks went to my rent and food).  It was a really rough time (in a I’ll admit I’m-spoiled-living-in-Manhattan-with-a-job kind of way), but that’s when I learned to love Forever21 and Filene’s Basement.

I’ve never been one to spend a lot of money on one investment piece. I get tired of clothes after awhile so I’d rather buy a lot that cost less.  Luckily I like searching to find a good deal on quality brands.

Well, I’ve actually never done this before, but I just tallied up how much I spent on clothes in 2012 (thanks to AMEX for providing a year-end spending summary)…and here it is..I spent $2,841 on clothes/shoes/jewelry last year! I don’t know if that is good or bad. I do know that I spent about that at Stop & Shop last year, proving that clothes are just as important to me as groceries. Here’s where I shopped last year:

where i shopped 2012See that big Marshalls logo?  That means I spent the most there, which isn’t a surprise since there is a Marshalls across the street from me next to Stop & Shop (temptation every time I need to buy food!)

So, inspired by Rachel’s Lookbook, who after doing some digging was inspired by the Budgeting Bloggers, and inspired by InStyle’s Shop Like a Fashion Editor feature, I’m going to try something new this year and try to stick to a clothing budget. I actually don’t think $2,841 for a year is too expensive ($236 a month), but I’ll try to bring that down a little bit with a budget of $200/month. So far I’m in great shape since I’ve spent $0 on clothes this year. But as soon as I stop seeing snow and it’s consistently closer to 60 degrees each day, I’ll be sure to be using my AMEX for new spring clothes.

Anyone else going to join the Budgeting Bloggers?

How to wear a bauble necklace to work

I don’t own a bauble necklace, but I’ve decided I need to get one (like this ModCloth necklace maybe?). I’ve really liked the ways my co-workers have styled their colorful bauble necklaces – it’s a perfect accessory as we head into the spring. I’m not in the office to take pictures of their cute outfits (I broke my arm 6 weeks ago and am working from home..story for another day), but I did find other stylish ladies wearing a bauble necklace in work appropriate outfits. What do you think of these necklaces and outfits?

Beaded detailing on my favorite dresses from the 2013 Oscars

Stacy Keibler’s Naeem Khan dress and Sandra Bullock’s Ellie Saab Haute Couture dress were by far my favorite dresses of Oscar night.

The dresses fit their bodies so well and I just loved the beading.  What were your favorites? These dresses confirmed for me that I need to buy some clothes with beaded detail for the spring.  Like one of these maybe?

Brittany Snow shows us how to wear a pretty pink blazer

I love Brittany Snow and it’s all because of the show American Dreams, which lasted only a few seasons, but I own it on DVD.  Yup..  She’s of course been in other things since then (John Tucker Must Die) and is all adult now with her cute new bob.  I love her in this pretty pink blazer – a really cute look for work especially as we get closer to spring. If you feel like splurging, I found a similar Stella McCartney blazer on sale for $519.  If you buy it, you have to send me a picture of how you style it :)

Bright men’s accessories inspired by Pharrell Williams at the Grammy’s

pharrell williams grammys 2013

(from people.com)

I really liked how Pharrell Williams looked classy with a pop of fun wearing a turquoise bow tie to the Grammy’s this past weekend. It reminded me that guys could easily have fun with their work wardrobe by adding a pop of color through accessories, like a pocket square, tie, socks or watch. Just remember to wear only one of these bright colors at a time – all four at once would look ridiculous.

Day-to-night Valentine’s Day outfits for dates and singles

I don’t get Valentine’s Day. When I was single, it was annoying and stressful and now that I’m in a relationship, it feels forced. The one time we tried doing the go out to dinner Valentine’s Day thing, we ended up getting lost on the way and our meals came out wrong. So, it’s just a confusing day for me. But that’s just me. If the day makes you happy , I’m happy for you! Whether you’re going out for Valentine’s Day on a date or with your single friends, here are some day-to-night outfit ideas.
