Suits and Sneakers: How to Properly Wear Them Together
Gone are the days when a suit and tie ensemble could only be worn with dress shoes. The past decades have seen the innovation of the classic men’s suit – from bold patterns to sneakers. But are sneakers really acceptable? The answer is yes and no. Wearing a pair of sneakers over dress shoes will largely depend on the occasion. If it is a strictly formal, black tie event, then sneakers should be kept in their boxes. Otherwise, for less formal situations, a suit can be worn with a pair of Chuck Taylors or Adidas. Here’s how you can pull it off.
The hem of the pants should not bunch up at the bottom, as it will create a lousy look. A bespoke suit is measured and made according to the measurements of the wearer. Its hem will fall perfectly on the right spot near the foot. This will give the wearer a polished look albeit wearing sneakers or trainers. Never settle for a too-long hem or you will end up looking badly dressed.
Minimalist sneakers or those with clean lines and minimal or no designs are the best options to wear with a suit. This will allow the wearer to still exude an air of elegance and sophistication. But there are those who want to make a statement with their look, and opt for loud, boldly coloured and patterned sneakers. This is also allowable provided that they can pull off the look. If the shoes are already a statement, then opting for a muted colour and design for a suit is the most sensible thing to do.
Retro sneakers are making a comeback
Retro sneakers are all the rage these days, and if they are worn with suits, they tend to stand out and make the whole look louder and pronounced. Cropped suit pants are the best way to go when retro sneakers are worn.
Wear clean sneakers
We all know that sneakers are one of the most used and abused pairs of shoes out there. So when they are to be worn with a suit, make sure that they do not show any sign of dirt, mud, dust or anything that will ruin the whole look. Make an effort to get them cleaned prior to pairing them with a suit otherwise the risk of looking poorly put together is high.
Expressing the individuality and character of a person can be exhibited through the shoes that they are wearing. But it should be noted that they should always consult the occasion if the preferred pair of shoes or sneakers is appropriate or otherwise. Sneakers will continue to dominate the fashion scene, and transcend from being everyday wear to formal wear. Having a few pairs of sneakers for different occasions – yes, even formal ones – is a good idea.
