i like stacked jewelry

i’m not a big jewelry person.  i like looking at it and buying it, but when it comes to the jewelry part of putting together an outfit, i usually give up and go for my everyday standbys.  but one style i love about clothes is now popping up in jewelry and i’m loving it – layers!  stacking/layering your rings, bracelets and necklaces is such a fun way to add texture to an outfit.  you can either stack different pieces of jewelry you already have for an eclectic look or you can buy a stacked jewelry set like these:

what time is it?

i have this thing about watches.  i don’t like them.  i’m stubborn and i don’t like to have to do things on a schedule on someone else’s time.  yet, my job revolves around making sure things are delivered on time and going from meeting to meeting and staying on schedule.  somehow i’ve managed to get by ok, but have been thinking lately about getting a watch.  it’s a big decision though because it’s something you’re wearing every day!

so that’s why i was really excited when i came across May 28th.  these watches are so beautiful and unique and fun!  May 28th hand makes one-of-a kind watches, in hundreds of styles.  it’s a lot of fun browsing through the site at all of the fun styles. which is your favorite?

independent jewelry and clothing designer: Norwegian Wood

i first found independent designer, Norwegian Wood, last year and loved the unique fringe necklaces, wood and leather jewelry, and the fun leggings.  and i learned from this interview with Angie, the designer behind Norwegian Wood, that there are a lot more exciting things to come!

How did you get started creating your jewelry and clothing line?

I’d worked in the mainstream fashion industry for the past 8 years, then got laid off at my most recent job as a head designer at a local denim company. From that point I decided perhaps it was time to take my destiny into my own hands, and Norwegian Wood was born.

What three words would you use to describe your current collection?

Spring 2010 – bright, geometric, modern

Fall 2010 – dusty, layered, archeological

What do you think makes your designs different?

I try to design items that help augment your existing wardrobe by modernizing things you already have. I’m also really interested in creating a collection that consists of seasonless core items that may repeat for more than one season, which are augmented by more season-specific items.

What do you see in the future for your collection?

I’m currently working on a new jewelry collection for fall 2010 that incorporates vintage metal components and reclaimed leather combined with agate, coral or coconut. I’m also collaborating with a local jewelry designer on a collection of gold and silver rings. In terms of clothing, I’m working on bulking up the range of offerings, by adding skirts, dresses, blouses and some pants to the collection. In short, a lot!

Why should people buy clothes from an independent designer over a mass-market store?

I think it’s really hard for people to buy their entire wardrobe from independent designers (due to cost, availability, etc.), so people shouldn’t think of it as an “all or nothing” thing. Instead, perhaps start to slowly add special pieces to your wardrobe, pieces you know you’ll love for years to come, not necessarily “practical” basics, although they could be if that’s your style. I think that if one takes this approach, then one day you will wake up and find you have an entire wardrobe of beautiful well-made clothing, instead of cycling through “must have” pieces every year. In the end, it’s the smart way to build a stylish wardrobe.  Think of it as creating a lifetime collection!

off the beaten path valentine’s day

in the spirit of valentine’s day coming up this weekend, i would like to share these “sweet nothing” necklaces from brooklyn based jewelry designer, in god we trust.  the necklaces are hand engraved with either one of the messages from the igwt list or you can customize with your own.  there are some more traditional messages like “with love” and “wish you were here.” and then there are some others that are a little off the beaten path like “let’s make out” and “wonder buns.”  i love the humor and attitude!

how to stay warm and stylish in the winter

tip #1 is to pick one statement accessory. did you find a cute hat that keeps you warm and doesn’t mess up your hair? did you receive an eye-catching hand woven scarf?  wear that statement accessory confidently and pair it with neutrals, like a black hat or gray gloves.

and if you don’t have a statement accessory, check out the family-run business of FutureCraft.  they make hand woven scarves and hats in beautiful designs and prints.

and for tips #2 and #3 on how to stay stylish in the winter..check out my article on the Examiner. com.  i’m now a boston fashion and style examiner.  :)  let me know what you think!

pura vida

that’s where my boyfriend and i were a year ago.  we were were sitting on the beach, ziplining through the rain forest, and getting away from the cold in beautiful costa rica.  so in case you are lucky enough to be getting away to someplace warm or if you are living below the equator – here are some bikinis and beach totes you can bring to the beach.  lucky you!

(500) days of zooey deschanel

so i finally got around to watching (500) days of summer this weekend, starring the lovely zooey deschanel, and i loved it!  there were a lot of things i liked about the movie – the story, the directing, the music (just bought the soundtrack), and of course – the fashion.  zooey deschanel’s character was very “50′s chic.”  she wore soft colors, like powder blue, and conservative dresses and skirts.

if i knew summer in real life, i would recommend she check out the online shop at UK based store, toast.  the clothes from toast are modern, with a hint of vintage, and in fun prints.
