Here are some designs from her warm weather collection. Shop them and other gorgeous designs in her etsy shop! Which designs do you like best?

sometimes it’s good to stand out a little. maybe by wearing a bright colored shoe or mixing patterns or trying out a new trend before it hits The Gap. here are 3 examples of how to be bold in what you wear:

this bright floral bag by drika.b will definitely make your outfit pop and will brighten up your day for sure!

the model makes this daal jumper look easy to pull off, but it takes confidence to wear this! the tank and pant are actually one piece with the belt. it’s really cute!

i’m personally not one for bright colors. instead, my favorite way to stand out is to mix patterns. i am in love with the contrast of the tan and white top of this dress from Eskell mixed with the black and white graphic bottom.

what do you wear when you’re feeling bold?

Adhesif Clothing is dedicated to the sustainability of clothes and making one-of-a-kind pieces. based in the home of the 2010 Olympics, Vancouver based independent clothing line, Adhesif, just launched its fun, feminine, colorful spring collection. find out more from Adhesif designer, Melissa, in this interview below.

How did you get started creating your clothing line?

Well initially I started out working as a vintage clothing buyer and many of the items I found were damaged in some way and not in sellable condition. I bought a lot of those items for myself and would usually repair them or refurbish them by altering the style and creating a more modern feel. Ureka! The idea for Adhesif Clothing was born.

What three words would you use to describe your current collection?

Whimsical, feminine, eclectic

What do you think makes your designs different?

Aside from the fact that every single piece I create is completely one-of-a-kind, I would say that it is in how the garments are actually put together that makes them different. There is quite the thought process that goes into creating each piece with regards to the color composition and fabric selections. I’ve been told by my clients that the garments look like walking paintings with breaths all their own.

What do you see in the future for your collection?

I want to always work with reclaimed and vintage textiles to create my collections. If anything I would like to create more designs for men! I have so many ideas. It’s just a matter of time. Without giving too much away I’ll say that the Adhesif’s F/W Collection is inspired by the 1930’s.

Why should people buy clothes from an independent designer over a mass-market store?

Well there are a million reasons why people should buy local and the reasons are very obvious. Supporting local produce and locally made items means supporting the local economy, which will only strengthen local communities. It’s actually a win-win situation if you really think about it.

With that said, most locally made garments, designs, and produce are very well made because many items are made by hand and there is more attention to the quality of the goods, thus meaning the longevity is there.

Also, people need to be informed about how damaging it is to buy mass produced anything. Sure the price is generally cheaper but it’s because most of the items are made to be disposable and have a non-existent lifespan. The consumer is thus forced to keep buying. Not a win-win situation. Unfortunately this means that these discarded items end up in landfills! Trust me, I’ve seen the proof of this first hand.

what’s great about this year’s spring trends is that there is something for everyone, like the different choices in colors and prints. here’s a quick spring 2010 fashion guide that shows you the variety in these options:

stripes – stripes can be scary, but they look great if you wear them right. find shirts where the stripes are at a diagonal or a contrast.

1 – black and rose striped top by corey lynn calter

2 – twisted stripe top by micaela greg

pastels – the perfect color trend for the spring. pretty pastel colors inspired by the season, like lavender, pink, seafoam green, and sky blue.

3 – lavender ruffle bow skirt by vivatveritas7

4 – pink a-line coat by kelly b

bold prints - this is a fun option if you’re looking to stand out with something new. you can look for a large flower print or a print that’s a mix of fabrics.

5 – collage dress by burning torch

6 – flower dress by dreamandawake

i first found independent designer, Norwegian Wood, last year and loved the unique fringe necklaces, wood and leather jewelry, and the fun leggings. and i learned from this interview with Angie, the designer behind Norwegian Wood, that there are a lot more exciting things to come!

How did you get started creating your jewelry and clothing line?

I’d worked in the mainstream fashion industry for the past 8 years, then got laid off at my most recent job as a head designer at a local denim company. From that point I decided perhaps it was time to take my destiny into my own hands, and Norwegian Wood was born.

What three words would you use to describe your current collection?

Spring 2010 – bright, geometric, modern

Fall 2010 – dusty, layered, archeological

What do you think makes your designs different?

I try to design items that help augment your existing wardrobe by modernizing things you already have. I’m also really interested in creating a collection that consists of seasonless core items that may repeat for more than one season, which are augmented by more season-specific items.

What do you see in the future for your collection?

I’m currently working on a new jewelry collection for fall 2010 that incorporates vintage metal components and reclaimed leather combined with agate, coral or coconut. I’m also collaborating with a local jewelry designer on a collection of gold and silver rings. In terms of clothing, I’m working on bulking up the range of offerings, by adding skirts, dresses, blouses and some pants to the collection. In short, a lot!

Why should people buy clothes from an independent designer over a mass-market store?

I think it’s really hard for people to buy their entire wardrobe from independent designers (due to cost, availability, etc.), so people shouldn’t think of it as an “all or nothing” thing. Instead, perhaps start to slowly add special pieces to your wardrobe, pieces you know you’ll love for years to come, not necessarily “practical” basics, although they could be if that’s your style. I think that if one takes this approach, then one day you will wake up and find you have an entire wardrobe of beautiful well-made clothing, instead of cycling through “must have” pieces every year. In the end, it’s the smart way to build a stylish wardrobe. Think of it as creating a lifetime collection!
