How to accessorize a work outfit with a skinny belt

I love skinny belts. They are a great accessory for any one because when worn around the waist, they flatter any body type especially when wearing bulky winter clothes.  Here are two ways I wore a skinny belt to work recently:

1) Skinny belt with a slouchy sweater – usually I wear this sweater with a pair of jeans. I love the shape of it and it’s warm (I got it from ASOS last year). This time I tried bringing some structure to the sweater by wrapping a skinny belt around it and I liked the result!

2) Skinny belt with a blouse – This polka dot shirt was a Marshalls find. It’s not a fitted shirt at all so I like wearing it with a skinny belt to add some shape to it. Similar to this outfit, I also love a skinny belt to bring shape to a flowy dress.

How do you wear skinny belts?

PS – I have a small waist so it’s been tough finding a belt that fits without a lot of extra belt hanging off. All of my skinny belts are from Forever 21 because they are the only place I’ve found that has XS belts.

HBO Girls Hannah clothes

I watch A LOT of reality TV.  It’s kind of embarrasing. There are only a couple regular TV shows that I watch and Girls on HBO is one of them, so I’m super-excited the second season starts in a couple weeks! One part of the show that I like is how different each girl is from each other..yet they’re all friends.  And with their different personalities, comes their varied styles.

Hannah doesn’t seem to spend a whole lot of time or money on her clothes (she can barely keep a job to pay her rent as we know). She probably shops at places like Forever 21, H&M, Urban Outfitters and ModCloth.

6 work appropriate skirts

I’ve noticed a trend around the office and the streets that has been annoying me a little.  Skirts that girls are wearing to work are getting inappropriate!  I’ve seen these especially on interns or entry-level recent college grads:

The skirts these girls are wearing are too short and too tight.  Keep those for going out at night ladies please!  Here are 2 tips for wearing a skirt to work:

1) The length should be close to the knee – a couple inches above your knee is the shortest you should go.

2) A body hugging skirt is not sending the right message at the office.  Make sure the skirt is not over-accentuating your curves.

Here are 6 skirts that are work appropriate:

1 – Forever 21 / 2 – Banana Republic / 3 – Gap / 4 – Forever 21 / 5 – Ann Taylor / 6 – Banana Republic

How to wear a maxi skirt

I’m kind of obsessed with maxi skirts.  They remind me of when Fiona Apple used to wear them all the time.  I still remember my gray denim and pink/maroon maxi skirts I had back then in the 90′s!

Maxi skirts still look great now and are so versatile.  They can be worn to work, out at night, or for brunch on the weekends.  Here are 3 ways to wear maxi skirts – and all of the skirts are under $50!

Left: Forever 21 white blouse / Hive & Honey chevron maxi skirt

Middle: Forever 21 printed top / Line & Dot maxi skirt

Right: White House Black Market sweater / Forever 21 maxi skirt

What to wear to work: brights and lace

Sydne is a fashion expert, stylist, host and blogger based in LA.  So it’s no surprise she knows how to put together a work outfit that mixes the best of the trends (bright color and lace) in a very classic way.  Check out her blog, Sydne Style, for more of her outfits and lots of helpful style tips!

Zooey Deschanel style (for the office)

She acts, she sings and she has great style!  Zooey Deschanel has fun with her vintage-looking style.  One recent outfit of hers that got a lot of buzz was this custom Prada dress paired with tuxedo designed nails that she wore to the Golden Globes earlier this year – very cute! And here’s one of her vintage-looking classic outfits: the floral dress!

Every girl should have at least one floral dress in her closet for the spring/summer months.  If you don’t have one or want to add another one (or two or three – I won’t judge!) to your wardrobe, check these out:

What to wear to work: black is the new black

Here’s another outfit from Isabelle from Urban Dai.  She’s a super-stylish Assistant Manager at ZARA in the Philippines, so being on trend is part of her job.  I think this all black outfit is so simply amazing!  It’s very New York and professional for any job. I love how Isabelle brings some pop of color to the outfit with her colorful snakeskin pumps and maroon watch.

What to wear to work: getting creative with colors

Isabelle from Urban Dai is an Assistant Manager at ZARA in the Philippines. Her amazing style led to her being one of the finalists in the Nokia and Elle Search for the Next Style Correspondent!  I really love this colorfully fun outfit that could work for any non-corporate office.  What I love the most is her mix of colors – the chartreuse print blazer and orange/tan skirt. And those gold shoes are so cute!

From runway to office: colored pants

I was excited when I saw this trend on the runway.  Wearing colored pants (green, blue, purple, pink) is a great way to brighten up the drab blacks and grays that are usually seen in the winter.  This is a trend though that is only appropriate for creative work environments, lika a PR or advertising agency, a magazine, a start-up, etc.  It’s best to tone down the bright color with a neutral top in black or gray or white.

I wanted to get a pair of jade colored jeans, but didn’t shop around enough.  I went to Urban Outfitters and tried a couple pairs on, but they didn’t fit right.  I gave up after that.  The thing is, although this is a fun trend, it’s something that probably won’t last too long.  So this is a trend where you want to shop around and get a good deal on it.  That may even include shopping at places or buying brands that you usually wouldn’t in order to get a good price, like these:

Candie’s – $32.99

Aeropostale – $24.70

What to wear to a work holiday party

I’m lucky enough to work at a company that goes all out for our annual holiday party where there is plenty of food, drinks, dressing up, friends, and dancing.  Most of the girls wear a cocktail dress and guys wear suits.  For some reason this year, I didn’t want to wear a dress.  I didn’t want to wear a dress I had already worn and I didn’t feel like spending money on a new dress, so I decided to work with what I had to put together this outfit:

I already had in my closet the skirt, shoes and necklace.  All I needed was a sequin top.  After going to H&M, Ann Taylor Loft, TJ Maxx, and Marshall’s, I finally found what I was looking for at Forever 21 – for only $12!  While I was there I also bought a pair of earrings..and a belt..and a scarf..  What did you wear to your work holiday party?

Top – Forever 21

Skirt – Rodarte for Target

Shoes – M by Marinelli (from DSW)

Necklace – from Filene’s Basement (it was my back-up necklace for last year’s work holiday party outfit)

Earrings – Forever 21
