what to wear to a summer wedding

deciding what to wear to a summer wedding all depends on the venue.  since each wedding is different, i use each wedding as an excuse for buying a new dress and it all works out!  this weekend is my cousin’s wedding – the first in the family – a big fat greek wedding!  i’m wearing this dress by esley and i’m really excited.

here are some ideas for what you can wear to any summer weddings you’re going to in the next couple months depending on the location:

the search for the perfect holiday party dress

’tis the season for holiday parties!  which of course means it’s time to shop for a new party dress!  there are two main types of parties – a work party and a party with friends – and the kind of dress you wear to each can vary depending upon the crowd.

for work parties, a conservative, yet fun dress is what you need.  satin, embellishments, and a dress that doesn’t show too much skin are things to look for.  black is always the safest color – but you could make it stand out, like anne hathaway’s dress, with some embellishment around the collar.  or, for an evening event you can stand out in a silver dress with a conservative shape, like zooey deschanel’s dress.  to add some color to the usual LBD, you can go for purple, like eva mendes, and add an eye catching belt to bring the outfit together.

if you’re going to a party with friends, you might want to get a little more daring in a sexy party dress.  there’s always the classic red mini dress a la ashley olsen.  or you can mix the conservative with the sexy in a black lace number like marion cotillard.  finally, leave it to victoria beckham to bring the sexy out in a one shoulder, mini, gold dress.

what are you wearing to your holiday parties this season?

audrey hepburn of course

my inspiration for the “american” menu here started with audrey hepburn as holly golightly in one of my all time favorite movies, breakfast at tiffany’s.  that movie is from 1961 and so many of the wardrobe pieces are still stylish today.  here are the 3 most timeless pieces holly golightly wears:

1) “i’m just CRAZY about tiffany’s” – the little black dress

2) “moon river…” – cigarette pants, a.k.a. capri pants, a.k.a. straight leg pants

zip it.

zippers!  they’re not just for holding up your dresses or pants – they are a fun detail that’s being added to clothes and accessories this season.  i love the unexpected texture the zippers add to these pieces.

style inspiration: nicole richie

last week on the cut i read that the stylish nicole richie is going to be expanding her house of harlow jewelry line to include clothes and shoes.  such a great idea and i’m super-excited for it because i’ve been loving her post-the simple life style!  so to hold us over until the clothing line comes out, here are some ways to get nicole richie’s style:

1) silver party dress by Cristina David

2) tie dye bag by The Style Rules

ps – this bag looks just like nicole richie’s, right?  that’s because it was made after The Style Rules saw nicole richie’s bag, but couldn’t afford it.  so she designed her own!

chef's special: ouma

one of the items that has received the most clicks on my site is the peaches n cream dress by ouma, so since you all liked that dress so much, i decided to find out more about the designer and feature some more of her beautiful dresses:

How did you get started creating clothes?

It had to be when a was a kid…I made Barbie trench coats out of paper towels and tube dresses from socks and ribbon, lol. When I seriously started sewing I was 16 and I had one pattern for a pair of bell bottom pants. After making my first pair I was addicted. All I could think about was fabric and how I can make the same pants but in different fabrics. I was a crazy person. I would plan a way to ditch school to go to the fabric store downtown. Once I was home I would work on a new pair to wear the next day. Now…15 years later it’s still all I want to do.

What three words would you use to describe your current collection?

Comfortable, Whimsical, FUN

What do you think makes your designs different?

I think it’s my fabric choices. Some of my designs are a little cheeky ;) some designs are rather simple though, leaving the person who wears it endless styling options. You can never have too many classic designs. I also love to use cotton, it’s such a humble and comfortable fabric not to mention easy to wear and care for.

What do you see in the future for your collection?

I’m working on a simple wedding collection right now. I have been experimenting with dyeing fabrics and I’ve had a lot of requests for tinted wedding dresses. So…a wedding collection with an antique inspired color palate will be up next!

Why should people buy clothes from an independent designer instead of a mass-market store?

I think it’s fine if you want to shop in a mass-market shop, for the basics at least. There are so many talented designers out there and to get your hands on a one-of-a-kind or a truly unique piece is definitely a treasure worth cherishing.
