how to wear gingham can be tricky since the print is sometimes associated with interior design decorations like curtains and tablecloths. but don’t let that turn you away from the pretty, early-1900′s throwback! if you have hesitations about wearing gingham, start with a neutral color like black and white and try these 3 tips:

1) wear gingham as an accessory, like this bag from Bella’s Bag. or find a bracelet or necklace with gingham in it.

2) pair gingham with a pop of color. this vintage inspired dress from kay em kay is really cute. make it more fun by wearing the dress with bright red or purple shoes or a bright colored handbag.

not to be confused with alice in wonderland, independent clothing designer, Allison Wonderland, is a Canadian designer who creates classy clothes in shapes and colors that would look good on any woman. i’m especially loving the high waisted skirt with pockets in the new spring collection! learn more about Allison Wonderland in my interview with the designer:

How did you get started creating your clothing line?

I couldn’t find things that I wanted to wear! Like silver hot pants with a matching corset, so I made my own. Then made some for others!!

What three words would you use to describe your current collection?

sunny, feminine and fun!!

What do you think makes your designs different?

I am not afraid of colour or interesting prints. I really try to make clothes that are flattering for different body types, considering the body when designing. The line is small so all the details that go into making the garment are really thought out.

What do you see in the future for your collection?

More stores….. I hope!

Why should people buy clothes from an independent designer over a mass-market store?

The clothes have much, much smaller runs so every second gal won’t be wearing the same thing and won’t know where it came from. It is always nice to support small businesses too!!

(500) days of zooey deschanel

so i finally got around to watching (500) days of summer this weekend, starring the lovely zooey deschanel, and i loved it! there were a lot of things i liked about the movie – the story, the directing, the music (just bought the soundtrack), and of course – the fashion. zooey deschanel’s character was very “50′s chic.” she wore soft colors, like powder blue, and conservative dresses and skirts.

if i knew summer in real life, i would recommend she check out the online shop at UK based store, toast. the clothes from toast are modern, with a hint of vintage, and in fun prints.

black and white is a trend just about every season. this winter, stylish celebs like halle berry, taylor swift and jessica biel have been seen in various black and white outfits:

but what caught my eye recently was this amazing collection from the sister and sister fashion duo of micaela greg. their collection has some really great black and white patterns, which brings a fun new perspective to the not so new black and white trend!

striped skirts – loving this look! pair it with a blazer, like rashida jones, to wear at the office or with a blouse, like heidi klum, to hide a baby belly (or not) for a night out.

and here are two great striped skirts to get this look. the first is from I’m Your Present – a cute stretchy mini-skirt splatter with gold, light pink, silver and black paint. the second is from one of my favs, little houses – a versatile piece that can be worn as a skirt or a tube dress.

i remember learning something back in art class in middle school about how red and purple are not complementary colors. they are just 2 colors that you’re not to put together, especially in an outfit. but..kate walsh has proved us wrong! she is looking amazing in this stella mccartney purple blouse and red skirt. i am in love with this bold mix of colors – check out some ways you could get this look for yourself:

i LOVE this collection by Sarah Seven! look at these beautiful, feminine, vintage-but-modern party dresses/work skirts/tops. aren’t they so pretty? i’ve seen a couple of these dresses while browsing around and finally looked through the full collection and i’m loving all the designs by this portland, oregon designer! and, an added bonus – 5% of all sales through the site are donated to 2 charities for 2 very important causes – compassion and international justice mission.

floral and stripes are hot trends for this spring and summer. usually it gets to be too much if you pair two trends together in one outfit..but floral and stripes are simple enough trends that mixing them together totally works. it’s what i’m wearing today actually – i have paired this shirt with a black and white striped cardigan. here are some examples of floral and stripe pieces you could easily pair together for a trendy outfit:
