meet independent designer Fischer Clothing

now that the clothing menu boutique is up and running, it’s time for you to get to know the designers in the shop!  first up is Kristina, the designer for Fischer Clothing, a women’s and menswear line.  here’s a little bit from Kristina about Fischer Clothing:

how did you get started creating your clothing line?

I just made up my mind and did it.  I sewed up the first collection in like 2 weeks and put together a photoshoot.  It’s a ton of work, but I absolutely love doing it.  I love learning and growing and evolving – I’m amazed with how much has happened in just the past year!

what makes your designs different?

My design process is very intuitive and personal.  I try not to be driven by trends or what anyone else is doing.  Each season, I follow a loose overall concept, usually derived from art, music and culture I’m currently digging on.  Then, I pull together fabrics and use silhouette inspiration from all over the place.

2 tops from Fischer Clothing are available in the shop – buy now with free shipping (for the grand opening only)!

spring 2010 fashion guide: colors and prints

what’s great about this year’s spring trends is that there is something for everyone, like the different choices in colors and prints.  here’s a quick spring 2010 fashion guide that shows you the variety in these options:

stripes – stripes can be scary, but they look great if you wear them right. find shirts where the stripes are at a diagonal or a contrast.

1 – black and rose striped top by corey lynn calter

2 – twisted stripe top by micaela greg

pastels – the perfect color trend for the spring. pretty pastel colors inspired by the season, like lavender, pink, seafoam green, and sky blue.

3 – lavender ruffle bow skirt by vivatveritas7

4 – pink a-line coat by kelly b

bold prints - this is a fun option if you’re looking to stand out with something new.  you can look for a large flower print or a print that’s a mix of fabrics.

5 – collage dress by burning torch

6 – flower dress by dreamandawake

last minute gift ideas

ok, procrastinators – only 4 more shopping days left to buy your christmas presents.  by now, it’s too late to order items online, unless you want to pay a hefty overnight shipping fee.  luckily, all around the US are great boutiques that specialize in stocking clothes and accessories from independent designers that make for great gifts!  here is a listing of some of the boutiques i’ve found in select cities.  click on the image to visit the store websites to see where they are located so you could make your last minute gift purchases.  the good thing is all of these stores have an online shop in case you’re loving the items and don’t live in the city.

if you have a favorite local indie boutique in your city that’s not on the list – please share!

stylish boyfriend wear

i love these oversized, comfy, fall weekend, “boyfriend wear” clothes from california clothing line lamixx.  the oversized men’s shirts are the best – they looks just like your boyfriend’s shirts, but are fitted for a woman (and are more likely to be clean than the shirts your boyfriend leaves around his apartment.)

you're so beautiful, it hurts to look at you

that quote is from one of my favorite shows of all time, my so-called life – an obsession of mine through the 90′s.  i could go on about it forever, but one thing i remember is that one of angela’s (claire danes) key wardrobe pieces was plaid shirts.

my so called life image

and my my so-called life, pearl jam, grunge rock loving self had multiple plaid shirts that i wore around middle school.  so it was surprising to see the plaid shirts making a comeback this season a la sarah jessica parker, drew barrymore and jessica biel.

luckily though, plaid this time around is in much more flattering shapes – like tunics and dresses.
