(500) days of zooey deschanel

so i finally got around to watching (500) days of summer this weekend, starring the lovely zooey deschanel, and i loved it!  there were a lot of things i liked about the movie – the story, the directing, the music (just bought the soundtrack), and of course – the fashion.  zooey deschanel’s character was very “50′s chic.”  she wore soft colors, like powder blue, and conservative dresses and skirts.

if i knew summer in real life, i would recommend she check out the online shop at UK based store, toast.  the clothes from toast are modern, with a hint of vintage, and in fun prints.

j'adore miss dior cherie commercial

have you seen this beautiful, fun commercial for miss dior cherie perfume that’s been on-air recently?  i love it!!  the music, the dress, the parisienne scenery, the vintage look.  and i just found out sofia coppola directed it, which totally makes sense because it resembles the style of marie antoinette and the virgin suicides – 2 movies she directed.  sofia coppola is amazing!

check out this video of the making of the miss dior commercial. it makes me dream of france in the spring – too bad i’m across the ocean and we’re getting a blizzard tomorrow!

bleubird vintage

i love looking through vintage clothes.  i love getting a glimpse of what fashion was like decades ago, and seeing how things that were in style then, still look good now!  so this week, i’m going to share some online vintage shops that i recommend you browse through.

the first is bleubird vintage – all items are hand picked by the owner and new items are added weekly.  right now they are working on updating the website and a lot of items are on-sale while the new website is in the works.  here are some of my fav finds:

audrey hepburn of course

my inspiration for the “american” menu here started with audrey hepburn as holly golightly in one of my all time favorite movies, breakfast at tiffany’s.  that movie is from 1961 and so many of the wardrobe pieces are still stylish today.  here are the 3 most timeless pieces holly golightly wears:

1) “i’m just CRAZY about tiffany’s” – the little black dress

2) “moon river…” – cigarette pants, a.k.a. capri pants, a.k.a. straight leg pants

dress like betty draper

yay – mad men is back!  what the heck slimeball don draper?  anyway, as i’ve mentioned here before, i love getting a glimpse into fashion in the 50′s/60′s when watching mad men.  i’m so jealous of the costume designer’s job!  check out this great video with the designer, janie bryant, giving a tour of the costume shop for the show.

and check out sohomode, a great shop on etsy, with handmade clothes that look just like outfits betty draper or peggy olson would wear, but modernized!

i mad men'ed myself

2 more weeks and mad men is back for its 3rd season!  i love this show for multiple reasons:

1) my obsession with what life was like in the 1900′s before i was born

2) the suburb story lines, complex characters, and captivating directing

3) my full-time job is working at an advertising agency – working in pete campbell’s role, although what we do now as an account executive has changed a lot since then.  i love seeing what the advertising world was like 50 years ago.  we do still drink in the office, but just the occasional beer on a friday afternoon – no one has a bar stocked with hard alcohol in their office – darn!

4) the fashion!  i love joan’s sexy dresses and the transformation of betty and peggy’s style over the past couple seasons.

yesterday i came across a promotion amc put together for the show called mad men yourself.  here’s me meeting up with don draper for a drink.  apparently i look like peggy (although i’m cuter ;) )

office fashion from 1955

as i mentioned in this post, i am very intrigued by what life was like in the early-to-mid 1900s.  i love tv shows like mad men (new season in august), american dreams (no longer on air, but loved it)..and audrey hepburn movies like breakfast at tiffany’s (of course) and sabrina..and books like valley of the dolls and the great gatsby.  i think i was born in the wrong decade!

anyway, one thing i love about looking back is what people wore and how it’s changed/not changed.  heres’ a video i just found from 1955 about office fashion.  they’re dressed for fall with wool and tweed dresses, timeless trends that i’m sure we’ll be seeing this year.  however, these dresses go for $12.95-$25 –that’s a bit more of a challenge to find these days!
