What to wear to work on a breezy summer day

I’ve been a member of Pose for a little over a year now (check it out to see all my work outfits). Just recently they added a new feature to the app that I find super-helpful. Each morning, I get an email from Pose with the weather report for where I live and two outfit ideas related to the weather. So when the weather report yesterday said it was going to be breezy, I immediately ruled out wearing a flowy skirt or dress (holding down a dress while walking in the city through wind tunnels is the worst!) Then I scrolled down in the email and saw that one of the outfits was someone wearing a pencil skirt – perfect for a summer, breezy day!

What to wear to a summer internship

Summer internship season starts at my company next week, so I decided to help out new summer interns by sharing some ideas for what to buy to incorporate into your work wardrobes. In putting this together, I realized anyone who works, whether you’re an intern or full-time employee, should have these types of items in your work wardrobe. I will say these are for people who work in a more casual, creative work environment, like a PR agency and not a corporate environment, like a law firm.

The key is to start out with wardrobe staples, like a pair of comfortable brown shoes for men or a pencil skirt for women, and then choose some accessories to keep your outfits on trend, like a watch for men or a statement necklace for women. Any other tips for dressing for work over the summer?

What is a skater dress?

I’ve been noticing this term, skater dress, a lot lately while browsing around online. Skater dresses are perfect for women like me who are small on top with curves below the waist because that’s exactly how these dresses are shaped: fitted on top with an a-line skirt. These are great for work as long as you find a dress that’s not too tight on the top or too short. (Aim for a dress that is no shorter than 1 or 2 inches above the knee.) ASOS has a ton of skater dresses! I bought this blue lace ASOS skater dress a couple months ago..although I will say it’s a little too short for work, but I’m keeping it for a date night.

I’m so excited for Mad Men!

Besides Girls, Mad Men is the only real show on TV these days that I watch. Anything else I watch is reality TV crap. Pretty sad, huh? I’ve been a fan of Mad Men from the beginning (all 5 seasons!) It’s been fun to see the fashion evolve on the show as it’s moved from the 50s to the 60s. One of my favorite parts of last season was Megan Draper’s colorful 60′s outfits:

These outfits can totally inspire work outfits today. Don’t you think?

Work fashion spring 2013: floral print

spring fashion 2013 floral

Etro / Bottega Venata

Floral print is a pretty obvious trend for the spring. Even if it wasn’t seen on the runways, it would still be appropriate, which means anything you buy with a floral print will be something you can wear year after year. And this year, floral is bold. The Prabal Gurung for Target collection has lots of floral. I so want the peplum top, but they’re sold out! Anyway, here are some other ways to incorporate bold floral prints into your work wardrobe:

Work fashion spring 2013: black & white

Valentino / Celine

The black and white fashion trend is one of the easiest to incorporate into your work wardrobe. Every woman should own a pair of white jeans for the spring/summer. Just be mindful of the see-through factor. Buy a thicker pair and wear nude colors underneath them! Add a black top and you’re set! If you want to get a little more creative with the black and white trend, try these:

Colorful spring outfit inspired by Amanda Seyfried

I realize there’s a few more weeks until it’s officially spring, but I’m over talking about winter! I do like the layering and boots worn in the winter, but the colors and dresses of the spring are more fun.

This outfit on Amanda Seyfried was actually taken in December, which is a nice way of wearing color in the winter. For spring, I found an even brighter yellow Splendid high-low dress and bright blue LOFT blazer that could be a cute look for work. I thought it was interesting that she (well, her stylist) chose nude heels to go with her outfit. It’s a smart way to keep the focus on the already bright colors on top. What do you think of these colors together?

How to wear a bauble necklace to work

I don’t own a bauble necklace, but I’ve decided I need to get one (like this ModCloth necklace maybe?). I’ve really liked the ways my co-workers have styled their colorful bauble necklaces – it’s a perfect accessory as we head into the spring. I’m not in the office to take pictures of their cute outfits (I broke my arm 6 weeks ago and am working from home..story for another day), but I did find other stylish ladies wearing a bauble necklace in work appropriate outfits. What do you think of these necklaces and outfits?
