Top Tips for Choosing a Toupee
Male pattern baldness is a serious issue that affects a considerable percentage of the population. 30 percent of men over 30 will suffer some hair less, whilst 80 percent of men over 80 will fall victim to male pattern baldness. Some men choose to do nothing about their hair loss whilst others attempt to encourage their hair to return using creams, lotions, and potions. Neither of these options will restore your hair to its former glory! The fastest and most effective way to tackle male pattern baldness though is simply to wear a toupee.
Toupee technology has evolved considerably over the past couple of decades. What was once considered to be as obvious and ineffective as wearing a dead hamster on your head has now become so seamless that modern men can wear a hairpiece that looks so much like their own hair that no one will ever know you’re wearing it.
If you’re thinking of wearing a hairpiece and want it to look as realistic and effective as possible then here are our top tips for choosing a toupee (see the Joseph’s Wigs selection here):
Know Your Measurements
If you want your wig to fit you seamlessly then it’s important to know your measurements and choose one that is exactly the right size for you. Take a tape measure and use this to measure the circumference of your head. You should also measure the length and width of your head from ear to ear and from your forehead to the nape of your head. This will give you a good idea of the size of wig you will need.
Most wigs are adjustable, and can me tightened or loosened using laces, or with innovative stretch technology. If in doubt, or if you think you’re in between sizes, always size up rather than down. A toupee that is too big can be drawn in and adjusted, whilst one that is too tight will feel uncomfortable, leaving you reluctant to wear it.
Think About How You’ll Use Your Toupee
There are so many different types of toupee available that choosing one for the first time can feel daunting. The key to getting the right one is to consider your lifestyle, and how you would like your toupee to fit into that. Are you looking for a piece that you could swim with? Do you want something that is easy to take on and off or something that will stay secured to your head for an extended period of time? Do you want to completely cover and replace your hair, or something that will cover a bald spot and then intergrate with your existing hair?
By thinking about what you want your toupee to achieve and answering all of these questions, you’ll be in a better position to choose the hair piece that you need. We advise thinking about what you want from your hairpiece before you start shopping: this will save you time and make the experience much easier and more pleasant.
When choosing their first toupee, most men choose to cover up their balding areas with a toupee that will integrate with their existing, fuller, hair. If you choose to do this then it is important that the hairpiece blends seamlessly with your natural hair. One of the easiest ways to ensure a seamless integration is to make sure that your toupee colour matches exactly with your natural hair. It may well be difficult to get an exact colour match when buying off the shelf. If this is the case, then pick a toupee that is as close in colour as possible to your natural hair and then take it to your hairdresser. They will be able to colour either your hair, your toupee (or both) to ensure that they blend so seamlessly that even you won’t be able to tell where your hair ends, and your toupee begins!
As well as colour matching your toupee you should also think about its thickness and texture. Whilst you might have always dreamt of having thick and curly hair, if your hair is thin and straight then this simply won’t look natural for you. If you want to change the look and feel of your hair completely (or even change the colour) then why not look for a hairpiece that offers full coverage instead? These can be much more versatile and enable you to be braver and bolder with your choices. There are so many different great options available that you don’t have to be restricted by your own hair if you don’t want to be.
