Why is the fashion world still obsessed with the leather jacket?
What does Marlon Brando’s Johnny Strabler, Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones, Elvis Presley, Debbie Harry and The Beatles have in common? Yes, it is a leather jacket that is considered iconic by their own respective style. These vintage pieces of clothing have been influencing the younger generations since the past century; especially the perfecto motorcycle jacket worn by Marlon Brando in the Wild Ones (1953) and the brown leather jacket worn by Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones, after which it was dubbedas the adventurer’s jacket. Hollywood has a huge part in styling the fashion world and the leather jacket owes its popularity to such remarkable actors who have made these jackets their trademark style.
The leather jacket was first manufactured by the Germans during the World War I for their aviation troops. But it looked nothing like the one we adore nowadays. These perfecto mens jackets were first developed after the First World War, a product of the collaborative efforts of Beck Industries (a Harley-Davidson distributor) and Irving Schott. The leather styles during those times usually had buttons, and in order to make this perfecto jacket stand out, they used a zipper instead of the buttons. With the outbreak of the World War II, these jackets served a similar purpose and became very popular with the U.S. Army Air Corps, which led to the new A-s leather style of jacket in the 1930s. They came to be known as the bomber jackets and were well insulated, appropriate for the aviation pilots.
These jackets became very popular post the World War II in America, with most of the Hollywood stars incorporating leather jackets in their styles. These jackets became iconic and are still widely known by the actors and actresses they were worn by. From military officials to biker dudes they were there in every aspect of every generation. The fact is that they are as warm as sweatshirts for men.
So, what is it that makes these leather jackets so special?
These jackets have come a long way and at every turn have inspired or influenced an idea ora thought. They have imbibed the personalities of iconic actors like Marlon Brando and Harrison Ford or music sensations like Elvis Presley, Steve MacQueen, and the Beatles and shaped them just like they have shaped these jackets. They are amazingly warm and lightweight, making them a very wearable and fashionably smart decision. They have lately become the apparel of choice for rebels and anti-socials, just like it was once associated with rockstars. Though a biker jacket, it is an acceptable choice for casual wear. It is tough, waterproof to some extent and is dirt resistant. This makes it an ideal choice for adventurers, due to its durability. But all these qualities aside, why is it never out of style?
