Why Suspenders Make the Best Addition to a Dapper Wardrobe
First, we will give you a brief history of suspenders & where they came from. Then we will explain what suspenders mean today and why you will want to add them to your wardrobe.
Suspenders can be traced back to the 18th century. During this time they were considered an undergarment. They were by no means considered an accessory and were not to be shown off like a pocket square. There was even an attempt to ban them without a jacket at one point. In the 1820’s the first “modern” suspenders were designed due to the trend in high waisted pants. These pants were so high waisted at the time that a belt could not hold them up so suspenders were attached by leather loops to hold them up. In the early 20th century pants began to sit lower and the need for suspenders was no longer as necessary causing them to fall out. However, they wouldn’t disappear because doctors at the time would recommend their use for men with large bellies. Later in 1970’s, leather suspenders were adopted by working women for a “unisex” look. In between then and now suspenders have been on and off with arguments about how to wear them and why to wear them.
You will often hear through the fashion police that suspenders are still considered underwear and they should be covered by a jacket, vest, or cummerbund, etc. We say they can be considered an accessory! Something that you can flaunt and show off on top of anything from formal wear to a basic tee to add a dapper look. The fashion police will also argue that you cannot wear suspenders and a belt at the same time because they serve the same purpose. Our suspenders have been designed to go both ways. We have detachable belt loops for the suspender to attach to a belt for anyone who needs the extra support for say, the worker who has a tool belt or anything extra weighing down. Otherwise, you can follow suit and clip them directly to the pant loop. So, all in all, we say wear them with whatever, however the heck you want.
In the modern day, suspenders still offer their intended purpose and functionality. To keep your pants up and give a slimming effect by drawing attention from the waistline to the chest. Fortunately for us, no one is still telling us what we can and can’t do when it comes to style. Both men and women today can wear suspenders as underwear, accessories, with or without belts. They are a perfect addition to any wardrobe that will never go out of date.
